How to Play Blindfold Chess

Settings

These preferences are kept in this browser and carry across every game.

Gameplay

Premoves Choose your reply during your opponent’s turn and it is played the instant they move. Turned off, the board only takes a move when it is yours to make.
ON
Confirm Resign Ask before handing your opponent the win. Turned off, Resign resigns.
ON

Appearance

Board Coordinates The file letters and rank numbers along the edge of a drawn board. Nothing else changes — not the orientation, not what any vision shows or hides.
ON
Piece Animation A man slides to his square instead of appearing on it.
ON

Sound

Sound Move, capture and check tones. Turn it off and the game plays in silence.
ON
Volume How loud those tones are. Moving it plays one, so you can hear where it is.
100%

Audio Chess

Audio Mode Nox speaks your opponent’s move and you can say yours back. A Listen button appears beside the board; nothing listens until you press it. Typing and clicking still work exactly as they do.
OFF

Your browser does the listening, not Nox — and in Chrome it sends what it hears to Google to transcribe, in Safari to Apple. Nox never records, keeps or uploads any audio, and what you said is discarded the moment it has been read as a move.

Move Announcements Speak the opponent’s move as it arrives. Only ever what this vision already shows you — in Complete Blindfold that is the console’s own line, and elsewhere the notation and nothing more.
ON
Confirm Spoken Moves Read the move back and wait for “yes” before playing it. Off, a move you say is a move you have made.
OFF
Clock Warnings Say how long is left at one minute, thirty seconds and ten seconds — your own clock only, once each.
ON
Speech Rate How fast Nox talks. Moving it says a move, so you can hear where it is.

Accessibility

Reduced Motion System follows the setting on your device. On makes every animation instant, here and on the board. Off keeps them however you have them.

Language

Language The language Nox is written in. Changing it never interrupts a game.

Connect Sign-In

Accounts need a Supabase project and a hosted address — a provider will not redirect back to a file on disk. Five steps:

  1. Create a free project at supabase.com.
  2. Open the SQL editor and run supabase-setup.sql, then supabase-social.sql (both next to this file).
  3. Authentication → Providers → enable Email, and Google, Apple and Facebook with each company's OAuth client.
  4. Paste your project URL and publishable key into SUPABASE_URL and SUPABASE_ANON_KEY near the top of this file's script.
  5. Host it (a Render Static Site works) and add that https address to Supabase's redirect allow-list.
